Ebony & Ivory Releases Debut Recording Red Hot - Featuring Guest Artists Dave Weckl and Victor Wooten

Once in a while a CD comes along that makes everyone sit up and take notice. Red Hot!, the debut recording of the performing Duo Ebony & Ivory is one such CD. It introduces major new talent, it features the diverse styles of an exciting young composer, and it dazzles with the unalloyed skill of seasoned performers. Ebony & Ivory is Andrew Gilpin on piano/keyboards and Fred Jacobowitz on clarinets/saxophones, with guest artists including Dave Weckl on drums and Victor Wooten on bass.



As writer Carol Cherwinski described it, One of the charms of this CD is that it defies labeling. Its musical styles run the gamut from bluegrass/jazz fusion to classical, with ragtime (Maple Leaf Rag, Solace), Klezmer (Chassidic Dance), musical theatre, straight-ahead jazz, and even a lyrical New Age tune (Aes Sedai) tucked somewhere in-between."



In response to the CD, Mychael Danna, film composer (Being Julia, Hearts in Atlantis) wrote, Andrew Gilpin is a brilliant musician," and characterized Gilpins compositions as beautiful writing." Original works on the CD include Blue Grass and Green Sky, Spanish Suite, Minority, Aes Sedai and, of course, Red Hot!



Having Dave Weckl and Victor Wooten playing my compositions was a thrill, says Andrew Gilpin, who composed two new tunes for them for the album. In addition Gilpin recorded his popular arrangements of America (from West Side Story) and Tico Tico. The CD was recorded in Toronto, Nashville, Los Angeles and New York City. Other artists appearing on the album include Ted Quinlan (Guitar), Tom Hazlitt (Bass), Wilson Laurencin (Drums), Cliff Almond (Drums and Percussion) and Rodrigo Chavez (Percussion).



Clarinetist Fred Jacobowitz is a master of the Benny Goodman style and delivers authentic performances of Air Mail Special, A Smooth One, and Benjies Bubble. Andrew Gilpin, not to be outdone, offers up a stylish performance of Cy Walters arrangement of Heart and Soul that evokes the heyday of elegant lounge pianists.

Barclaycard Flexi-Rate Encourages Cardholders to Repay More

Figures released today show that Barclaycard Flexi-Rate customers are repaying credit card balances more quickly – reducing the time taken to repay and the amount of interest they pay.

Flexi-Rate™ was launched in October 2005 and Barclaycard has analysed repayment behaviour over the past seven months. The figures show that, compared to a standard card, half as many customers are habitually making only the minimum payment. What’s more, the proportion of customers choosing to repay more than the minimum each month has risen by 10 per cent.

Changing repayment behaviour saves money, for example, a customer borrowing £1,000 on a credit card (15.9% APR) and repaying just the minimum each month would take 21 years and three months to repay and pay £1,400 in interest. The same £1,000 borrowed on Flexi-Rate™ and re-paid at 10% per month would take 4 years and 6 months and cost £110 in interest, a saving of £1,290.

Barclaycard Flexi-Rate™ charges a lower interest rate to those customers who pay off a higher proportion of their balance. Customers who pay more than 10% of their monthly balance are charged an interest rate of 9.9%, those who pay more than 5% are charged 12.9%. Customers who opt to pay less than 5% (minimum 2%) are charged 16.9%.

James Le Brocq, Head of Barclaycard UK Credit Cards commented: "Flexi-Rate™ is doing exactly what it was designed to do – that is, encouraging people to pay back borrowing sensibly. Increasing the amount you pay back each month can dramatically reduce both interest costs and the time it takes to repay."

To further encourage customers to repay more than the minimum, Barclaycard will be introducing a new statement message from May this year. Cardholders who have only made the minimum payment in the previous six months will see the following message on their statements:

Chicago Lawyers Represents Plaintiff in Trial That Results in $23.7 Million Jury Verdict over Fatal 2004 Trucking Accident

In what is believed to be the largest injury verdict ever in Will County, Ill., a jury last Friday awarded $23.7 million to three plaintiffs who sought compensation for two deaths and one serious injury that resulted from a 2004 vehicle accident near Plainfield, Ill.

The case, Sperl v. Henry et al. (04 L 428 consolidated), was tried in the Circuit Court of Will County over a three-week period. It was the culmination of nearly five years of litigation that was initiated after an April 1, 2004 multiple vehicle accident on Interstate 55 near Plainfield when DeAnn Henry, the driver of a tractor trailer, lost control of the truck and rear-ended multiple vehicles. As the nursing shortage in the US gets worse, nursing agencies are increasing their bill rates, (and their profits), while paying nurses less than half their bill rates.

According to NursesPro, a travel nursing agency based in Houston, TX, this unfair industry practice needs to change. Typically, travel nurses are paid only 50% of the amount for which their agency contracts them out. According to industry figures, the average contract bill rate is between $60- $80/hour to the Healthcare Delivery Organization, depending on the region of the country.
