Washington and Lee University Receives $100 Million Gift, One of the Largest Ever to a Liberal Arts College

During commencement exercises today, Washington and Lee University will announce that it has received a gift of $100 million, the largest in the 258-year-old school's history and one of the largest ever received by a liberal arts college.

"This act of generosity, vision and loyalty ensures that Washington and Lee will fulfill its historic mission to educate leaders who possess integrity and a commitment to service," said W&L President Kenneth P. Ruscio.

Of the total sum, $85 million will increase existing funds for need-based aid at the university. The Eastern Hills Sunrise Rotary Club will raise funds for the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (USA) in early 2006. The Club will use its two major fundraising events to provide financial support to the association. The Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (USA) is a 501 (c) (3) corporation dedicated to serving individuals affected by Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), their families, and interested professionals.

Prader-Willi syndrome affects children who are born with a chromosomal defect. There is no cure. The syndrome results in the individual suffering from insatiable hunger that causes uncontrollable weight gain and behavior issues. The affected individual’s metabolic system is slowed down, requiring a smaller amount of food before weight is gained. Affected individuals typically must eat less than 1,200 calories per day....
